Society Islands.

The Society Islands Archipelago is divided into two groups of islands:
-- The Windward Islands include French Polynesia’s biggest island, Tahiti, and, combined with its sister island of Moorea, have the biggest populations of the territory. The 1996 census reported a total population of 219,521 for all of Tahiti & Her Islands, with 162,686 people (74%) living in the Windward Islands. Tahiti’s population at the time was 150,000.
The Windward Islands are made up of four islands and one atoll:
The islands are Tahiti, Moorea, Maiao and Mehetia.
There are nine islands that make up the Leeward Islands in the western part of the Society Islands Archipelago. The Leeward Islands are spread out over a vast area located between 151° and 155° west longitude and 16° and 17° south latitude.
The Leeward Islands are divided into two groups. There are the main islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora-Bora along with the atoll of Tupai and the island of Maupiti. Further west, there are three small atolls: Mopelia, Scilly and Bellinghausen.
